Young Scholar’s Conference in Brno (YSC Brno):

Approaches to Language, Culture and Society

“Young Scholar’s Conference in Brno” is an annual event jointly organized by the Center for Chinese Studies of Masaryk University (Czech Republic), Soochow University (Taiwan) and the Taiwanese Student Association in the Czech Republic. The aim of the event is to promote academic and cultural interaction between young scholars from the Mandarin-speaking world and Central Europe.

The inaugural conference was hosted by the Center for Chinese Studies of Masaryk University on 29-30 March, 2017, in the Faculty of Arts of Masaryk University. The second conference will take place 25-26 March, 2018 (Sunday-Monday) also in the Faculty of Arts of Masaryk University.

We are pleased to have the following experts as the plenary speakers of the conference:

-          Assoc. Prof. Lucie Olivová, MA, Ph.D., DSc. (Masaryk University)

-          Prof. C. S. Stone Shih, Ph.D. (Soochow University)

Students are invited to give a 15-minute presentation proposal in the field of their own expertise, including, but not limited to the following areas. This year, the conference bears a theme of “Identity Formation and Modernity”, with a special focus on Mandarin-speaking regions or Central Europe. We particularly welcome submissions that deal with the following issues:

-          Identity formation,

-          Interaction between language, culture and society,

-          Art, history and literature,

-          Religious and philosophical studies,

-          Social and political studies,

-          Formation of modernity.

Presentations should be given in the presenter’s second language (i.e. if you are a student from Taiwan/China, please use English, whereas a student from the Czech/Slovak Republic will use Mandarin).

Proposals of presentation should be directly sent to the Conference Secretary, Dr. Wei-lun Lu 呂維倫, at

wllu@phil.muni.cz by 10 December, 2017. The proposal should contain a title in BOTH English AND Mandarin, the full name of the presenter, and a short abstract for the presentation (ca. 150 words in English). For queries, also get in touch with Dr. Lu.

There will be a guided city walk and a campus tour on 25 March. The conference dinner will be on 25 March.

We look forward to welcoming you to Brno!
