This research attempts to investigate the role of policy entrepreneurs \u2013 political actors who promote policy ideas \u2013 in Taiwan\u2019s foreign policy, more particularly in the making of New Southbound Policy (NSP), a flagship foreign policy initiative of President Tsai-ing Wen. The research begins by examining the uniqueness of the NSP from the previous Go South Policies implemented by Tsai\u2019s predecessors, particularly on the policy idea of \u2018people-centered approach\u2019. An example being used as part of this approach is a policy goal aiming to create a Muslim-friendly environment in Taiwan, a goal that has only occurred under the Tsai administration. For the questions that the research attempts to investigate, they are, among others, on who has promoted the idea of \u2018people-centered approach\u2019 and how these policy actors promoted their ideas. The preliminary research findings reveal that even prior to the inaugural of President Tsai in May 2016, various policy actors had been involved in the making of NSP, particularly through an ad hoc task force developed by Tsai\u2019s Democratic Progressive Party. Chief among members of this task force were few scholars from the Institute of International Relations and later its institutional outreach the Center for Southeast Asian Studies. \u2014by Dr. Yasmi Adriansyah<\/p>\n
Speaker Biography Dr. Yasmi Adriansyah is a scholar of International Relations and has been teaching and researching at the University of Al Azhar Indonesia (UAI) since 2016. Chief among his taught courses and research interests are International Organizations, Foreign Policy, Diplomacy, and Islam and World Politics. Prior to working as an academia, he extensively played a role as diplomat at the Indonesia\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and overseas postings in Geneva and Nairobi. In that role, he was a negotiator or involved at multilateral negotiations such as WIPO, WTO, WHO, UNEP, G77 and others. Yasmi earned a PhD on International Relations from the Australian National University and attended Foreign Service Programme at the University of Oxford.<\/p>\n
