The relationship between the military and civil society has recently become a serious issue of concern to the Taiwanese public. Issues such as compulsory service, reservist call-up system, relations between the military and democracy and also cooperation between civilians and military industry, are all highly-discussed nowadays. However, research on military sociology in Taiwan has no apparent development or is still limited to a confidential audience.<\/p>\n

This workshop follows on a series of lectures held earlier this year about the relation between military and civilian society in Taiwan, Myanmar and Thailand. In this workshop, we will further address fundamental issues for Taiwan\u2019s survival in an increasingly tensed geopolitical context due to the pressure from China. We will discuss topics such as the solidarity between the army and civilians, political warfare including corruption, the development of weapons such as missiles and submarines.<\/p>\n

It is important for Taiwan to learn from the experience of other Asian countries like Singapore, South Korea and Indonesia. Our goal is to stimulate sociological research on Taiwan\u2019s military and its relation with civilian society, most importantly, its resolution to defend Taiwan\u2019s democracy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
