Discover Taiwan Through Original-Language Scholarship: Taiwan Studies Resources on HyRead

Important developments in Taiwan Studies often first appear in Chinese-language monographs published in Taiwan. Reading these works in their original language allows researchers to engage with locally grounded concepts, sources, and scholarly debates—many of which have not yet been translated or widely circulated outside Taiwan.

The Taiwan Studies Collection on HyRead brings together recent publications from the past three years alongside influential earlier works. Its five thematic sections introduce current research on queer cultural memory, marriage equality, and literary history; Indigenous displacement, knowledge systems, oral history, and writing; religion, ritual, temple networks, and local society; and Taiwan literature, translation, cinema, theatre, and traditional opera.

Selected works include《盜火集》, a reassessment of Taiwan lesbian literary history;《強制移住》, a study of the forced relocation of highland Indigenous communities;《船行臺灣》, which examines maritime beliefs and local society through the Wangye Boat Burning Festival; and recent scholarship on Taiwanese-language cinema, theatre history, literary translation, and cultural memory.

For researchers outside Taiwan, discovering new Chinese-language scholarship across Taiwan’s many academic and independent publishers can be challenging. HyRead provides a practical gateway for identifying—and, where institutional access is available, reading—these original-language research materials.
