“Saigon Kid”. A Taiwanese Youth Depiction of the New Immigrants
Bride migration to Taiwan began over twenty years ago. The first groups of immigrants were married to Taiwanese men and were meant to have children to continue the husband’s blood line. These children have already attended school for a period of time, and are still confronted by an amount of prejudices. Although their fathers are Taiwanese, they are solely related to their immigrant mothers’ side. Teachers believe they are ‘stupid’, unable to speak Chinese, and conclude that they would affect the class climate negatively. Normally teachers would blame the parents for a student’s failure; however in that case they would revert to communication problems with the migrant mother due to their lack of Chinese. This talk gives an introduction to the story told by “Saigon Kid” by Taiwanese female youth author Zhang Youyu and the illustrations accompanying the text. The book is also placed in the context of other volumes written and other topics addressed by the same author.
婚姻移民在台灣二十年前開始出現，第一波的移民多數和台灣男性結婚且以傳宗接代為目的。而這ㄧ群孩童已經到達就學年齡，進入學校教育ㄧ段時間了，在學校環 境中他們仍須面對許多偏見。雖然他們的父親是台灣人，卻只被強調與移民母親那方的關聯。學校教師認為他們的學習能力教差，無法說好中文，並且認為他們會影 響班級學習進度。通常學校教師會將學生的學習落後怪罪於父母，然而在這個狀況下他們又會把問題指向中文能力差的移民媽媽。 此議題在“西貢小子”這本圖文故事書中被探討，本書作者為台灣青年作家張友漁。這本書是此作者發表過的眾多議題之一。

韓國東國大學知名社會學者金益基教授在本中心莊佳穎副主任邀請下至本校訪問，並於熱門通識課程「台灣流行文化」演講「Korean Wave in the Context of East Asian Culture」，介紹時下話題不斷的「韓流」現象。
金教授具有深厚的社會學研究基礎，近年轉入「韓流」（Korean Wave; Hallyu）研究，探討韓國流行文化如何在經濟、文化各層面席捲東亞以至世界各國。在金教授看來，「韓流」不只是韓國議題，更與全球化下的文化混雜性密切相關。因此，教授由文化與資本全球化的角度切入，說明「韓流」的發展崛起、「韓流」成功之因、「韓流」的影響，當然還有「韓流」所招致的批評。
演講會中，來自不同系所的同學紛紛提出與「韓流」、韓國文化相關之議題，甚至是中、韓、台、日間的文化比較，與金老師一來一往熱烈地互動、對話。面對各國文化發展過程所產生的矛盾情結，金教授提出「cultural exchange」與「mutual understanding」的觀念，希望以實際的接觸與交流來達到對彼此的理解與包容。

荷蘭阿姆斯特丹大學全球化研究中心主任Jeroen de Kloet教授受本中心賀安娟主任之邀來台進行短訪研究，不但參觀台北多處都市文化資產的保存與活化現況，亦在本中心引介下，與本校台文系、國文系、華文所教師們進行餐敘和學術交流，同時也於莊佳穎老師「台灣流行文化」課堂進行專題演講「The Creativity and Criticality in the Globalizing China」（全球化下中國的創意與批判），與本校各系同學互動。
Jeroen教授之專長為全球化與當代都市研究，演講中他以其豐富的東亞研究經驗，帶來以北京與香港兩大城市為主的文化觀察比較，探討在全球化潮流與資本經濟影響下，各地文創產業與藝術市場之樣貌，以及其中可能包含的批判與反動。根據他的觀察，以北京為首的流行文化帶有不少中國元素與意象（Chineseness），並透過國族主義的氛圍創造話題與流行；香港文化則由於過去的殖民背景而介於東、西方之間曖昧複雜的位置；台北近年則透過如寶藏巖與華山藝文特區之模式，結合文創空間與歷史記憶，試圖躋身創意城市。
然而正如Michel Foucault所言，「Where there is power, there is resistance」，Jeroen教授透過幾個實例，指出藝術所具有的越界與批判本質。其中，教授特別注意到中國的「山寨」現象，對他來說，「山寨」代表的不只是純粹的商品盜版與仿擬，「山寨」其實顛覆了西方或過去將藝術品視為「獨一無二」的觀點。在此，藝術不但可以複製，甚至可以因應顧客需求進行各種客製化調整。如此弔詭的現象，使得模仿與創新的界線變得模糊而混雜難辨，所謂「創造」與「藝術」的定義也值得我們重新思索釐清。
莊佳穎老師研究領域涵蓋台灣流行文化與消費議題，課堂上關注台灣在地的各種文化現象；Jeroen教授帶來以北京與香港兩大城市為主的文化比較與批判，實有助於開啟課堂上的跨文化比較視野，至少是台北∕香港∕北京或台灣∕中國大陸之間的參照，對於學生多元視野之啟發有相當助益。

Popular Culture, Popular History: Japanese Pop Culture as Medium of Conveying History and Memory
在本校國際台灣研究中心暨台文所莊佳穎老師的安排之下，日本筑紫女学園大学英語及多媒體研究學系教授一木順老師日前至本校短訪研究，並於3月24日「台灣流行文化」課堂進行專題演講：「Popular Culture, Popular History: Japanese Pop Culture as Medium of Conveying History and Memory」(流行文化，流行歷史：日本流行文化所傳展的歷史與記憶)，探討流行文化與歷史記憶的關係。
一木順教授的專長為美國研究、媒體及文化研究，近來則切入日本流行文化領域，同時也開始關注與台灣相關的流行事物。演講一開始，一木老師便描述他下飛機後隨處可見日本商品與廣告，諸如Hello Kitty及日本藝人看板等，讓他感覺彷彿置身日本一樣。這便是流行文化的滲透力，日本政府也經常透過這種soft power進行政治或觀光性的宣傳，因此流行文化其實並不只是一種娛樂，而往往帶有其他社會意涵。
一木老師關心的，便是流行文化「傳遞」或「再現」歷史記憶的可能。他選取日本漫畫中有關原子彈(A-bomb)的題材進行研究，描繪這類漫畫由1945年至今的各階段面貌，發現漫畫中的原爆受害者，多以一種女性的、弱勢的姿態呈現，而原子彈本身則具有陽剛而侵略的特質，透露戰後日本社會的陰影與集體迷思，也可見日人弭平傷口、撫慰心靈的方式。
至於台灣在日本流行文化中又呈現何種樣貌呢？一木教授以各種漫畫、電影為例，認為台灣有時以異國情調的形象出現，有時則與日本有某種血緣或親緣上的連結；又如芥川龍之介作品改編的電影「軌道」(A Trolley)所示，台灣甚至被視為是保留戰前舊日本精神的地方，擁有現代日本已逝去的那些古樸而美好的特質。
流行文化始終是學生最有興趣的議題之一，一木老師帶領大家以歷史的、社會的角度看待週遭習以為常的漫畫、小說與電影，讓台下學生時而會心一笑，時而開懷共鳴。最後，一木老師也提出他對台灣文化不解之處，請同學為他解答。正如一木老師所說，一切的研究都是為了帶來相互之間更進一步的理解與體會。

3月8日本校邀請澳洲國立大學(The Australian National University)亞太學院(College of Asia & the Pacific)院長Kent Anderson來訪簽定兩校合作備忘錄，國際台灣研究中心也藉此機會邀請Dr. Anderson進行專題演講「International Engagement Strategies in Higher Education for an Asian Pacific Century: Why Taiwan Studies Matter to ANU」，並與本校相關教師進行圓桌座談。
澳洲國立大學(ANU)獲台灣教育部補助，正進行為期三年之台灣研究計畫，本次Dr. Anderson到訪除與本校簽訂正式備忘錄外，亦針對該校的亞太結盟策略及台灣研究的發展現況進行專題演講。ANU 1946年成立於首都坎培拉，與本校有不少雷同之處。在高等教育競爭激烈的環境中，Dr. Anderson表示，選擇性的、重點式的發展乃是ANU的策略與契機，包括側重學術研究並專攻亞太事務。其中，台灣原住民文化足以提供豐富之人類學、考古學、語言學研究素材；台灣的後殖民情境與全球化現象亦是亞洲研究不可忽視的主題之一。這也是ANU欲積極與台灣進行合作並與本校簽署協定的原因。此外，Dr. Anderson亦向在場師生介紹ANU的環境與資源，期待本校華語師資的注入，亦歡迎學生至該校深造。
隨後，透過國際台灣研究中心的安排，外賓再與台文所、台史所、華文所等台灣研究相關教師進行座談，初步達成合辦跨國研究坊之共識，並將由各校系所就其專長領域規劃子計畫內容，促進亞太地區台灣研究的跨領域整合。

Place-making in the Everyday in Taipei: Notes on a Research Project
Dr. Mark Harrison關注台北城市的空間形塑(place-making)過程，舉例來說，現在的「信義計畫區」便是標準的都市規劃下的產物。從1980年代大量出現的建築群，到1990年代的世貿中心，再到2000年代成為台北甚至台灣新地標的台北101大樓，信義區儼然成為首都中之首都。
在這段空間形塑過程中，市府充分掌握了空間規範與使用劃分之權力；如依不同之使用目的區劃出「商業娛樂」與「行政辦公」等區塊，讓信義區成為井然有序而明顯易識的地理空間；而透過行人徒步區與汽機車道的分隔，營造出寬闊明亮的市容景觀及便於行旅往來的公共空間。
Harrison教授指出，在市府二十多年的經營與治理之下，信義區成為全球化的、網絡緊密的(networked)、健康的、文化的、娛樂的、充滿生活風格的代表，也是當代台北都市治理下的必然產物。至於因過去各種歷史偶然所造成的歷史斷裂與為人淡忘的歷史碎片，則往往如「四四南村」轉型為公民會館的方式，以懷舊的形象被標示與保存起來。

Mediated Visibility and New Social Movement: Taiwan and China Compared
Dr. Haiqing Yu的研究鎖定當代的「影像社運」或「視覺社運」，探討新興傳媒所具有的視覺性與即時性，是否為新一代社運注入更多的元素與影響力。所謂「影像社運」或「視覺社運」是指在傳媒與資訊高度發達的今日，人們不但可藉由文字或鏡頭為社會運動進行記錄，更得以透過各種即時性的媒介與網路平台，如「公民新聞平台Peopo」(http://www.peopo.org/)等，將週遭社運之實況、理念、訴求，甚至是台面下或內部的矛盾與衝突一一傳播出去。如此一來，受影響者便不限於在場之社運人士、政府官員、員警或民眾，而往往擴及更多社群與更多面向之辯論，進而帶來類似「溝通行動」(communicative action)與「數位民主」(digital democracy)之效果。Yu教授以去年野草莓運動及八八風災為例，說明今日新傳播媒介的可見性(visibility)對台灣新社會運動的影響，也指出台灣民間媒體已由個別的競爭與對抗，步入組織與合作的階段，新、舊媒體之間也逐漸達到協調互補的狀態。
在此同時，中國的社運記錄也正面臨著轉向。Yu教授指出，中國過去的社運記錄片與報導多採旁觀之立場，並帶有濃厚之電影美學導向，往往在報導結束後，仍無法為對抗之兩造帶來正向影響。不過當代新興媒介的出現，則為社運帶來更多的可能。如中國偏遠鄉鎮仍存在不少不識字之民眾，對他們而言，影像勢必比文字更具意義與力量；透過簡單的攝影與網路設備，民眾得以自行記錄事件始末並上傳至網路平台，供大眾點閱、討論，大大提升了曝光度與大眾參與度。換句話說，記錄者不再只是旁觀者，而開始與非政府組織的社會行動相結合，開啟了從思考到行動、從旁觀到參與、從分散到整合的轉向。
Yu教授認為，隨著越來越多「參與式影像」(participatory video)、「社區影像」(community video)、「草根影像」(grassroots video)的出現，未來可預期的將不只是眾多獨立、自主的「個體」，而是一獨立、自主的「社會」。
