SOAS Conference on Cross-Strait Relations in the Age of Globalization (September 7-8, 2012)

 Date: September 7-8, 2012

Venue: G3, Russell Square: College Buildings, SOAS
Organizer: Centre of Taiwan Studies, SOAS
The Centre of Taiwan Studies at SOAS is scheduled to hold an international conference on “Cross-Strait Relations in the Age of Globalization” on 7-8 September 2012. The conference will use both theoretical and empirical perspectives in order to explore the evolution of relations between Taiwan and Mainland China since the late 1980s, with a particular emphasis on important but hitherto under-researched issues related to cross-Strait globalization-security linkages.
The conference plans to investigate four major areas:
  • theoretical approaches to the study of cross-Strait relations;
  • globalization forces underpinning bilateral ties;
  • security issues facing Taipei and Beijing;
  • the impact of globalization on security in the dyadic context.
Twelve papers will be presented at the conference. Motifs for discussion will include, for instance: rationalist models of conflict and the relationship across the Strait; cross-border mergers and acquisitions between China and Taiwan; cyber warfare across the Strait and its implications for the USA; transnational crimes in the Cross-Strait context; and the impact of production globalization on defense and technological security across the Strait, with special reference to the strategically important semiconductor industry.
