The aim of the workshop is to embed the phenomenon of bentuhua 本土化 within a broader theoretical discussion about the “spatial turn.” The spatial turn will be understood as an impulse to interdisciplinary research which connects geography, history, and literature. From a methodological point of view, it encourages the fusion of literary studies with sociology. Among the main research questions for the literary critics as well as the historians, geographers, and cultural anthropologists we intend to invite are the following: How and into what extend can a place influence a local community and its cultural production? Are the perception of a place and the resulting identification with it strictly tied to reality, or is it foremost an imaginary place? Is it more fruitful to understand a place as a mere location or as a dynamic network of relationships?

Topics to be addressed:

  • Taiwan History and Space
  • Taiwan Architecture and Space
  • Taiwan Literature and Space
  • Taiwan Film and Space
  • Environment and Taiwan Literature
