Taiwan-East Asia Event Workshop (2023/12/6)

Taiwan-East Asia Event Workshop: Feature on Taiwan Culture: Language, Translation and Historical Memory

This workshop explores the intricate interplay of language, translation, and historical memory within the framework of indigenous Taiwan, Taiwan Studies and broader East Asian area studies. Themes of decolonization and colonial modernity offer nuanced ways in which the shaping of narratives and perspectives on Taiwanese culture can be understood. Against the backdrop of Taiwan’s indigenous communities, the complexities of historical memory shed light on how colonial legacies persist and influence contemporary discourses. In scrutinizing linguistic dynamics, we aim to uncover the role of language as a tool for both resistance and assimilation, elucidating how translation serves as a bridge between diverse cultural worlds, and has become a central element in enriching the academic discipline of Taiwan Studies. How do we discuss the shared experiences of decolonization and the legacy of colonial modernity in the region that connect Taiwan Studies to the broader context of East Asian area studies? Through an interdisciplinary approach, our workshop contributes to a deeper understanding of the intricate web connecting language, translation, historical memory, and the ongoing processes of decolonization, offering insights into the evolving identities and narratives that explain the complexities of Taiwan culture and link Taiwan Studies to the global scene.
